Remote and beautiful Aspen luxury home is off the grid, pristine, energy efficient, and beautiful

The ultimate in privacy and peace and quiet

Adventure property for the serious skier, snowboarder, and backcountry enthusiast “If you can’t run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch”

Are you a big dog? Or would you just rather stay on the porch? Skiing home from the Sundeck on Aspen Mountain takes on a whole new meaning when “home” is the New York Lode property north of Midnight Mine Road. Serious skiers have been taking a left turn off Ruthie’s Run for years, calling a taxi to meet them at the Midnight Mine Road to take them back to Aspen after they ski the off-piste routes down through the aspen and spruce glades above Midnight Mine Road. For years, they’ve been skiing through what is now one of the most intriguing properties on the Aspen real estate market. I’ve seen some incredible Aspen homes, but this one is one of the most interesting. While Aspen has become crowded and noisy, this home offers the ultimate in privacy and peace and quiet while it’s only a few miles from downtown Aspen.

Unique permitting for a back-country Aspen luxury home

Architect Dean Moffatt, a long-time resident of the Roaring Fork Valley and Aspen architect, has long had the dream to build an off-the-grid luxury home in a backcountry setting. Dean managed to purchase the New York Lode mining claim back before Pitkin County snapped up all the available claims to discourage development of backcountry mountain properties. If you’ve ever navigated the Pitkin County building permit process, you’ll know it’s not easy to obtain permits for a simple luxury home in a lot-and-block subdivision, much less an off-the-grid home at 10,000 feet in elevation. Dean managed to push his 1041 permits through the process before Pitkin County slammed the door on such projects in the future. We’re not saying that there will never be another property like the New York Lode, but there sure won’t be very many. This is one of a handful of backcountry luxury properties in the Aspen area.

Close to Aspen, the Sundeck, restaurants, nightlife, culture—yet worlds away

The New York Lode home is almost within eyeshot of the Sundeck restaurant on the top of Aspen Mountain. Access is gained from the Midnight Mine Road on Castle Creek, just a few minutes outside of Aspen. The last 7/10 of a mile is accessible by snowcat or snowmobile in the winter. In the summer, any decent SUV will easily make the trip. Jump on your snowmobile, and you’re there in 15 minutes to ski Aspen’s famous powder snow, hang out with your friends, and maybe notice which celebrities are in town this week. While most people ride the gondola up to the top of Aspen Mountain, you’ll probably be riding the gondola down to get to town. Want a good cup of Zele coffee or spend the afternoon browsing at Explore booksellers? Snowmobile up to the Sundeck and ski down to town. Once you’re on the New York Lode property, however, it’s all yours—phenomenal views of Mount Hayden and the Elk Mountain Range, Castle Creek Valley, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Highlands Bowl, and the Conundrum Creek Valley beckon you. It’s peaceful. It’s quiet. You’re all alone.

Wildlife, Hunting and Fishing in Colorado

Even though this property is minutes from Aspen, it has a bountiful resident wildlife population, including a resident herd of elk and a bear that has a den nearby. Mule deer, blue grouse, raptors, eagles, coyotes, lynx, marmots—all can be found on or near the property. Savvy locals know that the elk hunting here can be excellent, and trophy mule deer bucks are found in the Castle Creek valley. Speaking of Castle Creek, fly-fishing for smaller trout is good straight downhill from the New York Lode, and the nearby Roaring Fork River, Frying Pan River, Colorado River, and Crystal River offer world-class fly-fishing.

Ski-in, Ski-out Aspen luxury real estate—with a significant twist

The words “ski-in, ski-out” have been used to define properties on the slopes of ski areas, and yes, it’s a great convenience to ski home and ski out to start the day. This property brings a whole new meaning to the term. The New York Lode is for hard-core skiers who revel in back-country, off-slope skiing and snowboarding. This is not for sissies or people who need help buckling their ski boots. This property is for the sophisticated, eco-minded buyer who can ski with the best of them, and revels in the opportunity to snowmobile up to the top of Ajax, hang with the big dogs, and then ski off the porch—back home.

I’ve spent a lot of time at the New York Lode, and I’ve got some interesting perspectives on the place. Give me a call and I’ll be happy to arrange a showing for you. Please acknowledge that my time is valuable, and buyers may be asked to qualify themselves.

Please call or email me for more information.
